Court suspends Salman Khan sentence.

The high court in the Indian city of Mumbai has suspended Bollywood star Salman Khan's sentence for a 2002 hit-and-run conviction, pending his appeal. Khan was convicted on Wednesday by a lower court of culpable homicide. The court sentenced the actor to five years in prison for killing Noor Ullah Khan by driving over him as he slept on a pavement. Four others were injured. Many expected Khan to be jailed today Friday but the court extended bail. A final appeal hearing is due in July. During his trial, Khan argued his driver had been behind the wheel, but the judge said it was the actor who had been driving, under the influence of alcohol. Within hours of his conviction on Wednesday, Khan approached the high court and was given interim bail for two days, meaning he stayed out of jail. The actor - who had faced a possible 10-year jail term - then went home, where a number of Bollywood stars met him. Correspondents say Friday's ruling will be a huge relief for th

We Are Yet To Receive Jonathan’s Handover Notes, says APC

Image
A few weeks to May 29 handover date, the transition committee set up by outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan has yet to meet its counterpart committee set up by the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.   Reports have it that the handover notes, which the Buhari team is to study and ask questions on, are yet to be ready. It was gathered in Abuja on Thursday that the argument between the two teams over terms of reference of  the Ahmed Joda-led Buhari Transition Committee is largely responsible for the deadlock. Mohammed, confirmed this in a statement he made available to newsmen. Mohammed, who is a member of the Buhari Transition Committee, explained that while the Jonathan Inauguration Committee had been meeting with its equal in the Buhari team,  “its transitional committee has yet to even meet with ours.” The APC spokesman also blamed a political adviser to President Jonathan for attacking the APC over the issue. It described as offensive and ill-intentioned t

David Cameron Wins another 5 YEARS!

Image
LONDON — Prime Minister David Cameron and his Conservative Party won a surprisingly solid victory in the British general election on Thursday, with nearly complete results Friday morning showing the party close to an overall majority in Parliament. The result defied pre-election polls that suggested a tight race between the Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party. It returns Mr. Cameron to 10 Downing Street for a second term, possibly with enough seats in the House of Commons that he will not have to rely on support from smaller parties to enact his agenda. He was expected to travel to Buckingham Palace on Friday to be invited by the queen to form a new government. The vote was a stunning disappointment for Labour and its leader, Ed Miliband, who had shifted the party away from the more centrist strategy it pursued in the late 1990s and early 2000s under Tony Blair. Mr. Miliband was widely expected to step down as leader and open up a new debate over the party’s

Wole Soyinka's Anti-Igbo drama, Harvard to post video on line.

The Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African and American Research in the United States has said that it will release the video of the lecture delivered by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, within a week. Some online media had quoted Soyinka as saying Igbo were politically naive while delivering a lecture titled, “‘Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies,” at the institution. He was quoted as saying “The Igbo are probably the only group of Nigerians that you can predict with great accuracy whom they will vote for in an election, because they tend to put their votes where their stomachs take them; suffering as it were, from incurable money-mindedness, as they would stop at nothing in their quest for personal financial gain.” However, Soyinka said in a statement on Tuesday that it was unfortunate that people could tell lies against him. The playwright described those who believe the report as morons.
